Robbin Malbon Premiere Exhibit
December 5, 2003: The Hunter Hogan Gallery premiere professional art exhibit opened, featuring the works of Robbin Malbon BSCHS' new art/photo instructor. The opening was very well attended with more than thirty CHS parents, ten faculty/staff, eighteen students, and about forty-eight people from the community at large present. The premiere exhibition received publicity in the Daily Break of the Virginian Pilot in two areas. One was as a featured exhibit and the other was in the list of events happening in the Hampton Roads area. The exhibit was on display through December 21, 2003.
Chuck Mangione
Musician Chuck Mangione visited with CHS music and drama students. He talked with the students first about how and why he became a musician and the passion of his craft. He then fielded a series of excellent questions from our students. At the conclusion of his time here he played a song with our jazz music students as back up. It was a wonderful experience for the students and they are asking when the next guest artist will visit.
Photo journalist Bob Lerner
Pulitzer winning photographer, Bob Learner visited with CHS Photo I & II students. Bob is a and he is one of the most notable living photographers of the twentieth century. He will return in spring, 2004 as visiting artist and we are working to bring his photographic survey of the city of Virginia Beach to the Hunter Hogan Gallery. The date is yet to be decided. Bob's recent opening at the Chrysler Museum brought in over one thousand people on opening night. For the tenure of the exhibit it is thought to be the most popular photo exhibit ever hosted by the Chrysler.
December 4, 2004: the Art Department hosted a wonderful Art Extravaganza in which each of our disciplines within the department were highlighted . The programs were run for the entire student body during the school day and again that evening for CHS parents. Martine Strohmeyer and several students put together an instructional video of how to do a contour drawing. This was played in homerooms to half the student body while the other half enjoyed the concert. Contour drawing is a basic art technique of how to see. We had one hundred percent participation of the entire student body in attendance that day. After the holidays, the best examples were displayed around the school. We had about one hundred parents and students in attendance for the evening performance. Parents put together a nice cookies and sweets table so that our guests could spend time viewing the 140 pieces of student art displayed in the Hunter Hogan Gallery. We also raised nearly three hundred dollars in a silent auction of Christmas tree ornaments made by the art students. The money was sent to the Maison Fortune orphanage in Haiti.
October 21, 2003 -- The BRTFAC Community Art Education Program was inaugurated. The program included six classes: Introduction to Photography; The Watercolor Experience; Exploring Clay Trough Ceramics; Painting Realism; Drawing Realism and Life Drawing and four workshops: Watercolor; The Raku Experience; Hand Building Functional Forms, and Hot Wax Workshop. The Spring Session will start in March 2004.
October 14, 2003:  The first student exhibition was coordinated with the BRTFAC dedication and school renaming ceremony. The student exhibition culminated with school-wide performances by our theater classes and music department. Prior to Christmas break, visual art students exhibited hand-made ornaments featuring master copies on a twelve-foot Christmas tree in the gallery. The Art Club auctioned the ornaments to create a fund for donation to the Maison Fortune Haiti Orphanage.
Fall, 2003: Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School was accepted as a partner with the Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond. The first exhibit opened February 4, 2004 - and featured 26 etchings by the German Expressionist Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945). During her lifetime Kollwitz endured with acute sensibility the upheavals that had beset the German state from the beginnings of the social revolution in the late 19th century through two world wars and a depression. Her work records the tragic struggle of these historical events. It is her observance of tyranny and injustice suffered by the poor and her preoccupation with motherhood and death that are the subjects of these compassionate and powerful prints produced between 1892 and 1921.
